Sonali Chitrakar has been painting since childhood. She has learnt under the guidance of her mother Swarna Chitrakar a renowned Patachitra artist of Naya, Pingla. She paints square/ rectangular (Chouka) Pat, Scroll (Jorano) Pat and draws on traditional themes like stories from the two Epics as well as on contemporary issues like Kanyashree Scheme of Government of West Bengal, gender discrimination, Nirbhaya rape case of 2012, 9/11 and 2004 Tsunami. She paints traditional Patachitra as well as Pat based motifs on diversified items like saree, umbrella, kettle etc. She has travelled in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune and Bangalore.
Sonali Chitrakar had travelled overseas to display her painting and singing in the Gulf-city Muscat in 2017.
